Nowadays, men are using hair pomade more than they have in decades to achieve all kinds of unique styles and textures.  At Don Juan Pomade, we pride ourselves on our pomade formula that uses natural ingredients which don’t just keep your hair in place all day but nourish it from deep within thanks to plant-based extracts and natural moisturizers.

Not All Pomades are Created Equally

They all have their own unique consistency and blend of ingredients that each aim to make hair look and feel its very best.  But sometimes you end up with a jar of pomade that tells you right off the bat that something is off. In this case, its stickiness. Let’s discuss why it’s most likely to happen.

Wasn’t Formulated Well

A little bit of stickiness isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if you have fine hair that needs a little more help standing on its own.  But, too much stickiness is just hard to work with, and usually comes from a poor choice of ingredients, or improper mixing techniques.  A lot of synthetic ingredients produce a sticky feel, but some natural ones do as well, like vegetable glycerin and lanolin.  While natural ingredients are generally a good thing, you don’t want ones that are overly sticky, or you’ll have a hard time getting the hair that you want.

It’s Past its Prime

Another reason a pomade may be too sticky is because it’s simply expired, or wasn’t stored properly.  Over time, the ingredients in a pomade can change their consistency as they age and break down.  Now, ideally, you always have a freshly prepared jar that has a long way to go before it expires.  But, some companies keep products on their shelves for too long, or don’t store them properly, and so they go bad.

You can usually tell if a pomade is no longer good by looking at it and smelling it.  If the texture is off, as it would be if it’s too sticky, or if it looks separated, it probably isn’t worth using.  Also, if it has a strange smell, or doesn’t smell like anything at all despite having a fragrance in it, you should avoid using it.

Why Very Sticky Pomade is Not Ideal in Most Cases

Pomade that is too sticky is unlikely to give you the style you’re looking for.  It will be hard to work with, first of all, due to having a hard time transferring from your hands to your hair.  Also, it will likely have a hard time styling the hair properly due to its texture that isn’t conducive to running a comb through.

Pomade that is too sticky also points to some sort of issue with the manufacturing or handling, which can indicate that the product just isn’t made well.  And, the stickier the pomade, the stickier your hair will be, and most guys don’t want to end up with sticky hair that feels unpleasant to run their fingers through.
