The comb over haircut is one of the most common men’s hairstyles on the planet, and it’s easy to see why.  It can be worn in different ways, it looks good on almost everybody, and it’s low-maintenance and inexpensive to maintain.  However, have you ever wondered if a comb over hairstyle is right for you?  There are situations when a man should consider getting a comb-over, and there are some situations when he shouldn’t.

What is a Comb-Over Hairstyle?

A comb-over is an act of styling your hair in such a way that your bald patch can be concealed by the rest of your hair.  This style has been around for decades, and there are several different ways to achieve it.  Typically, men with receding hairlines will use this style to cover up their bare spots, allowing them to keep their natural look for much longer than they would otherwise be able to.  For some men, this may be the best solution for retaining a youthful appearance.

How Can a Man Get a Comb-Over Hairstyle?

So, you’re starting to see some thinning hair and wondering if a comb-over hairstyle is right for you?  If you’re ready to embrace the comb-over, here are three ways to make it happen.

  1. Figure out what style of comb-over suits your face shape. The goal is to draw attention away from your hair loss and instead create a flattering look that complements your features. For example, if you have an oval face, we suggest a classic side part rather than a center part or undercut.
  2. Once you’ve chosen a haircut, pay attention to how the sides are cut. If they’re too long, it creates the illusion of excess weight on your head — not exactly ideal when you’re trying to balance out thinning hair on top with more volume on the sides.  By keeping them short and neat with a fade or scissor cut, you’ll make your head look less heavy.
  3. Choose a haircare product. While there are plenty of products that can help create thicker-looking hair, we recommend choosing one that naturally blends in with your existing hair color, so it looks natural rather than obvious.

Examples of a Comb-Over Hairstyle

There are many variations of the comb over hairstyle: from the faux comb over to the modern comb over, and everything in between, this style is one that works for every hair type and length.

#1: Rolling Comb Over

This is a classic comb-over style that shows the thinning hair in all its glory.  This style can be achieved by combing your hair over the bald spot and securing it with a blow dryer and products like mousse, pomade, or wax.  This can give you a natural-looking finish to your hair.

#2: Boomerang Side Sweep with Part

Keep your hair longer on top and shorter on the sides.  This way, when you style it, you can get the look of a boomerang shape flowing from one side of your head to the other.  It’s important that you keep your hair long enough so that there’s more than just an inch or two of length to work with.

You don’t have to go for extra-long locks, but you do need some length on top so that you can create a nice flow from one side to the other.  The part helps to keep things neat and tidy while framing your face and emphasizing the shape of your haircut.

#3: Long and Messy Sweep

A classic take on the comb over hairstyle.  The hair is swept back and to the side in order to cover the thinner areas at the front of the head.  This style works best with longer hair but also requires some patience as it needs to be styled every day.

#4: Swept Ivy League

This haircut is perfect for those who want their hair long but not too long – with just enough length at the top so they can sweep it over any thinning areas and make them disappear.  A swept Ivy League combines classic styling with modern trends; think of it as the ultimate “grown-up” cut for any guy who wants to look polished without looking old-fashioned.

#5: Long Sweep with Widow’s Peak

This is a classic comb-over look and one of many men’s favorite.  It involves leaving long front and top pieces of hair that cover up the receding hairline and thinning patch at the crown area.  The widow’s peak part of this style helps to frame the face nicely and draw attention towards it.

To style this look, you’ll need to grow out your hair on top so that it’s about 4-5 inches long and have your barber cut in a deep widow’s peak to better frame your face.  Come over to one side and sweep back at an angle towards the crown area, covering up any thinning patches or receding hairlines there.  Add in some light hold Don Juan Pomade or Don Juan Handcrafted Styling Clay to keep everything in place.

#6: Curly and Puffed Comb Over

The curly and puffed comb over is a popular hairstyle for men with curly hair or wavy hair.  It gives them a neat and fashionable look.  This hairstyle is easy to style; all you need to do is part your hair in the middle use gel or mousse to comb it on both sides.  You can also use hairspray if you have curly hair so that it stays put throughout the day.

So, Why Do Pomades, Hairstyling Creams, or Matte Creams Work When Getting a Comb-Over Hairstyle Anyway?

To sum it up, a comb over is perfect for men with thin hair.  If you have thicker hair, then it’s probably better to consider other hairstyles that better incorporate your hair and scalp.  To answer the question: when should a man get a comb over?  As soon as he notices thinning hair or a receding hairline.  A comb over will likely require you to part your hair and then slant your head over to the side.

  • For people with thick hair, a pomade or matte cream works great.
  • If you have fine hair, opt for a styling cream for texture and hold.
  • When it comes to a hairstyle that requires more hold, pomade is the way to go.
  • For a lighter hold, go for either a matte cream or styling cream.
