Many men spend a great deal of time and money on haircare, choosing the best-quality products for their needs.  So, it makes sense that some men wonder if they can combine two products together in order to get a desired effect.

If you’re a fan of pomades, you have probably considered mixing pomades together for various purposes.

Why There are So Many Different Pomade Formulas

So, why are there so many different types of pomade on the market, anyway?  Well, it has a lot to do with the wide variety of hair types and hair-related needs that exist.  For instance, men with thicker, coarser hair tend to benefit from richer formulas, while men who have thinner hair need more water-based ingredients so that their hair doesn’t look weighed own.  Additionally, some pomade formulas address unique concerns like frizz, lack of shine and even grays.

When It’s Okay to Mix Pomades Together

So, can this be done?  And, what effects will it have on your hair?

You’re Trying to Achieve a Unique Look

If you’re the type of guy who likes to experiment with his hairstyle, you may find that combining two pomades together actually helps you achieve a unique look that couldn’t be achieved otherwise.  For instance, maybe you want intense shine as well as lots of texture.  A texturizing pomade combined with a shine-enhancing pomade will allow you to achieve that look.

You’re Running Low

If you absolutely require pomade in your hair daily because you need to keep things nice and smooth, then it’s normal to panic a bit when you open that jar and find that you have next to nothing left.  In that case, mixing two pomades together is better than going without any pomade for the day.  After all, it’s not the end of the world.

Both Pomades are Formulated for the Same Hair Type

Another thing to take into consideration is whether or not both pomades are formulated for the same hair type.  If they are, you shouldn’t have any problems.

When It’s Not Advisable to Mix Pomades Together

When They’re Each Made for a Different Hair Type

If you have thick, curly hair, you really need to stick with a pomade that’s specially formulated for your unique hair type.  Combining this type of pomade with one that’s created for men with very fine, straight hair can interfere with your overall look.

When One is Expired

Maybe you found an old jar of pomade in the back of your cabinet, and you don’t want to throw it out since you paid money for it.  So, you decide to use a little bit with your current pomade.  The only issue is that pomades, like most products, expire.  If you’re using a pomade that has expired, it can have several negative effects.  For one thing, the texture will likely have changed for the worse.  And, it might have an unpleasant smell.

Mix Them Based on Your Preferences

Mixing pomades together is something that can either benefit your hair or ruin your look, depending on the products that you combine and why you’re combining them in the first place.  However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t give it a try if you’re really interested.  After all, you can always wash that pomade out and start all over again.
