If you have been looking to grease up your hair so that it has better shine, you’re going to want to be selective when it comes to the product that you choose to buy.  That’s because not all hair grease products are created equally.  Basically, some being higher in quality than others.

When talking about the quality of a hair grease product, or any hair product for that matter, what we are really talking about is the ingredients that make up the formula.  The ingredients make a big difference in terms of how they affect your hair in the long term.  Even more importantly, perhaps, ingredients can absorb through the scalp and enter the bloodstream, so you need to make sure that the ingredients are not known to be toxic to the body.

So, why would a hair company use low-quality ingredients to produce hair grease products?  Well, the answer is simple.  They want to enjoy the largest profits possible.  Low-quality ingredients are naturally cheaper to acquire, and so a lot of less-than-reputable brands will use them so that they can make higher profits off of their formulas.

Now, let’s talk about what matters when it comes to the quality of a hair grease product, so that you can make the most informed purchase possible.

Synthetic Ingredients

Synthetic ingredients are any ingredients that are produced through artificial means.  They do not occur in nature but are rather developed in a laboratory.  Now, not every synthetic ingredient on the planet is bad or toxic, or capable of damaging your hair.  But, overall, they tend to be less effective in the long run.  They can dry the hair out due to their harsh nature or simply give the illusion of healthier hair.  This is all without actually doing anything beneficial in terms of nourishment.

A great example is silicones.  Many hair grease products use silicones because they make the hair extremely shiny and slippery.  But we don’t recommend them.  That is because silicones create a seal on the surface of the hair, without actually permeating the hair within.  This makes the hair look soft and shiny, so people think the hair is healthier.  However, it’s a façade.  Also, it can block moisture from getting inside the hair.  Why?  Because silicones are difficult to remove without harsher shampoo products.  This can dry the hair over time.

There are also synthetic waxes, like petroleum jelly, used in hair grease products that can cause the same type of issue to occur.  Petroleum jelly, also known as Vaseline, will prevent moisture from getting into the hair.  This means that over the course of time, your hair becomes damaged without you even realizing it, since the outside appears to be soft, shiny, and smooth.

Natural Ingredients

Natural ingredients are generally ideal when it comes to hair grease products.  That’s because they rely on natural plant-based waxes and oils to coat the strands, creating that signature greasy, shiny look, while also penetrating the strands to offer both intensive moisture and nutrients, which benefit the hair in the long run.  And, natural ingredients are typically gentler on the scalp and follicles, which can prevent irritation, inflammation and, in severe cases, hair loss caused by damage to the scalp tissue.

Toxic vs. Nontoxic Ingredients

It’s always important to avoid ingredients that can be toxic to the human body.  Like we said, compounds in these ingredients can gradually accumulate into the body through transdermal absorption, and slowly cause unwanted effects.  For instance, parabens, commonly found in hair products, may cause endocrine system issues over time, if used in excess.  The same goes for formaldehyde, often used as a preservative, as it’s a known carcinogen.

Fragrances

We all want to smell good, so it is normal to gravitate toward hair grease products that have a nice fragrance.  But you should always choose natural fragrances.  These are derived from botanicals and essential oils, over synthetic ones.  Synthetic fragrances frequently come from petroleum, which can cause scalp irritation and dandruff.

How to Choose a High-Quality Hair Grease

Luckily, it’s easy to determine the quality of a hair grease product.  Just look at the ingredients on the label.  This is where you’ll be able to quickly discern whether or not a formula is made with natural, plant-based ingredients, or ones that are derived from harsh chemicals.
