Some guys do find that no matter how much they maintain their beard daily with beard balm or beard oil, there is a persistent itchy feeling that leaves them feeling frustrated and irritated.  Beard itch isn’t the most uncommon issue in the world.  However, that does not make it any less annoying.

Logic would tell you that if you’re keeping your beard moisturized with a beard oil or beard balm, then it shouldn’t itch.  Why?  Because itchiness is most commonly a sign of dryness.  But you may be surprised that a lot of beard care products out there can actually make the skin extremely itchy,  That alone, basically defeats the purpose of using them.

Reasons Why Beard Oil or Beard Balm Could Cause Beard Itch

We’ll talk about the various culprits behind beard itch when using beard balm and beard oil products.  Plus, what you can do to defeat this issue once and for all.

Reason #1: Allergic Reaction

You might be surprised to learn that often, a beard product causing itch isn’t due to the formula per se, but the fact that you’re allergic to one or more of the ingredients in the formula.  Skin allergies are far from uncommon.  You can be allergic to any single ingredient in the formula.  Even if, it’s not known to be harmful on its own.

Solution: If you have a feeling that you have a skin allergy, your best bet would be to set up an appointment with an allergist who can isolate the specific allergen, which will allow you to easily avoid it in the future.

Reason #2: Synthetic Fragrances

These are artificially derived, chemical-based fragrance additives. They’re most commonly derived from petroleum.  The problem is that petroleum is a very harsh ingredient that often results in skin irritation, especially among those with sensitive skin.

Solution: It’s easy to avoid synthetic fragrances by opting for all-natural formulas that use essential oils and botanical extracts rather than chemically developed scents.

Reason #3: Irritants

A lot of companies that make beard care products put known irritants into their formulas.  This isn’t because they benefit the skin or beard in any way.  It’s imply because they cut down on manufacturing costs.

Solution: Avoiding known chemical irritants is pretty easy.  Just look for a company that uses only natural, plant-derived ingredients, which are typically gentler on the skin.

Reason #4: Dehydration

Sometimes, you’re experiencing beard itch after using a product because your skin is dehydrated.  For those who don’t know, dehydrated skin is different from dry skin.  You see, dry skin needs fats like plant oils, while dehydrated skin needs more water.

Signs of dehydrated skin include:

  • Irritation after using even very gentle products.
  • A feeling of tightness.
  • Pore that appear larger than usual.

All of these things mean that the moisture barrier that protects the skin has become damaged.  So, anything you apply to your face will cause an unpleasant reaction.  It’s much like putting salt on a wound.

Solution: Drink plenty of water and use hydration-boosting ingredients like hyaluronic acid.  Also, try avoiding scented products for a month until your skin bounces back.
