A lot of men are surprised to discover just how many different combs exist on the market.  Therefore, it’s easy to feel intimidated by the enormous selection, having no idea which one is superior and why.  One of the most important factors to consider when buying a comb is the material from which it has been made.  Not only does this affect the durability, and, ultimately, the longevity of your comb, but also plays a role in how it can take care of your hair.

Comb Materials

We’ll be going over what we consider to be the best materials for a hair comb. So next time you go comb shopping, you’ll have a little more ability to narrow things down. This way, you can make the best purchase.

Metal

Metal combs are perhaps the most popular besides plastic ones, for a few reasons.  One is that metal combs are extremely durable.  Their teeth are very unlikely to break, which also means that they are more capable of undoing tangles without bending or snapping off.  And, they can help reduce friction which can lead to frizz and split ends.  There are many metal materials from which combs can be made, but we love good, old stainless steel.

Wood

They’re not as durable as metal, but they should still last for a very long time.  Wood combs have a soft material that can preserve the moisture of your hair while distributing it evenly throughout.  And, they feel great in the hand, especially when they are carved to be highly ergonomic in terms of their grip.  We love bamboo combs, as well as sandalwood.  There are many wood materials out there used for combs, so choose one that appeals to you, both in terms of aesthetics and feel.

Carbon

Becoming more popular these days.  Carbon is a highly resilient, naturally lightweight material, making it perfect for men’s hair combs.  They’re naturally heat-resistant unlike the two materials described above, which is good if you use some sort of heat source when styling your hair.  And, due to their resilience, they’re good for thicker hair that’s more prone to big tangles.

Horn

Derived from real animal horns.  Now, if you’re a strict vegan, you will probably not want to buy this kind of comb.  But horn is a surprisingly strong and reliable material, and it feels incredibly smooth in the hand, making it a luxury item as much as a practical hair care tool.  Another advantage is that they’re the best at offsetting static, which can make your combing sessions extremely annoying.

Choose a Comb that Works for Your Hairstyling Needs

The four materials listed above are our personal favorites both for their durability and capability of ensuring that the comb does its job properly.  Use this guide as a resource, and don’t be afraid to experiment with other materials as well if you so choose.
