Can You Over-Comb Your Hair?

We all want to have healthy, soft and manageable hair. Many of us go to great lengths to maintain flawless locks. A crucial part of a daily hair care routine is combing out knots in order to give hair a smooth, sleek appearance. However, combing your hair too aggressively or too frequently can do more harm than good.

Our individual hair strands are attached to follicles that exist on the scalp. On average, one hundred hair strands fall from their follicles each day. While this may sound like a lot, new hairs take their places very quickly.

However, if you comb your hair too harshly or too often, you’ll end up pulling more hairs out of their follicles, making it difficult for hair production to keep up. That’s because the act of combing tugs on each hair strand. Combing too much causes these hair strands to become loose, making them prone to falling out in large numbers.

Scalp Irritation

If you’ve a particularly sensitive scalp or you suffer from dandruff, combing too much can lead to serious scalp irritation and unwanted flakiness. A highly sensitive scalp will overreact to the constant friction produced by the comb. This can cause the scalp to become itchy and tender.

For possible dandruff, you might find that combing too much aggravates the condition, causing the flaky patches of skin to become more severe. This can result in embarrassing flakes appearing all over your shoulders.

Hair Breakage

Combing too frequently can damage individual hair strands as well. Each hair strand is covered in a protective coating known as a cuticle. The friction that results from a comb running across the hair can cause the cuticle to become damaged over time. As a result, each hair strand becomes extremely vulnerable to damage. Eventually, hair can break, leaving it looking brittle, dry and frizzy.

Things to Consider When It Comes to Combing Your Hair

It’s important to comb only when necessary. For many men, combing once each day is adequate. If you have thicker or curlier hair, twice each day may be acceptable.

Always use a high-quality comb. Cheaper materials can cause hair breakage because of the friction. Make sure that the teeth are spaced properly to avoid tugging on hair as this can lead to hair loss.

Also, try to avoid combing your hair when it’s wet. Wet hair is more prone to breakage.
