These days, consumers care more about the ingredients in their daily goods than ever before.  Most of us now thoroughly read ingredients in food items before buying them and go to great lengths to opt for natural cleaning products in our homes.  A lot of us also take the time to investigate the products that we apply to our bodies regularly, like soaps, shampoos, and lotions.  This is to ensure that we aren’t using harsh chemicals that can lead to issues down the road.

At Don Juan Pomade, this is a topic that is especially important to us as it pertains to hair care products, as anyone who has looked through our ingredient lists can tell you.

Commercial Men’s Care Products and Synthetic Ingredients

Sadly, a lot of commercial companies that produce products for men’s beards and hair rely on synthetic, chemical-based ingredients to fill up their formulas.  The main reason for this is that these ingredients are cheaper, and so companies can enjoy higher profits as a result.  Not all chemically derived ingredients are objectively terrible for you.  But the bottom line is that in most cases, there are natural alternatives that are superior in just about every way.

Let’s go over the most commonly used chemical ingredients found in these types of products.

Sulfates

Usually found in cleansers and shampoo products.  Sulfates allow dirt and oil to bind together, so that they can easily be rinsed away.  The process that creates this bonding is pretty aggressive.  That’s why sulfates are known for being extremely stripping, meaning that they strip away moisture.  As you would imagine, a product that strips away moisture is probably not ideal for your beard or your hair.

Parabens

Found in many skincare, haircare, and beard care formulas.  They’ve been known to have the potential to disrupt hormones by absorbing through the skin and into the bloodstream.

Synthetic Fragrances

These often derived from petroleum.  Not sure what this is?  Well, it’s an extremely harsh chemical that can cause significant irritation.  A lot of men find that heavy synthetic fragrances lead to skin and scalp issues.

Silicones

Are slippery ingredients that make the hair soft and shiny.  The issue with silicones is that they accomplish this by coating the outer layer of each hair with a seal.  This prevents moisture from getting deep into each hair, which means that the internal strand can be damaged and dry, while the outer cuticle looks like it’s healthy.

Why Natural Ingredients May Be Better

So, what’s so great about natural ingredients compared to synthetic ones?  Let’s go over the various ways.

Gentler

Natural ingredients tend to be gentler.  Many of the ingredients we discussed above are aggressive and can either lead to irritation or strip away moisture.  Natural ingredients rarely have this harsh quality to them and are commonly less likely to irritate the skin and scalp.

Less Likely to Be Toxic

Some synthetic ingredients can be toxic if they build up in the bloodstream for too long.  Hence, why we think that natural is the way to go.

May Be Better for Long-Term Use

It’s likely that natural ingredients are ideal for daily use compared to synthetic ones, as synthetic ingredients may gradually cause damage to the hair, while natural ingredients typically support the structures and follicles with nutrients and moisture.

Offer Beneficial Properties

Most plant-based ingredients used in men’s hair and beard care products offer unique beneficial properties.  For instance, an array of plant-based oils are packed with vitamins and omega acids which directly feed the follicles.  Many essential oils offer cleansing and calming properties that aid in the reduction of irritation while naturally removing dirt.

More Environmentally Friendly

Naturally-derived ingredients are also more friendly to the environment, since many of the chemically derived ingredients used in the beard and haircare industries release toxins into the air.

Examples of Natural Ingredients in Men’s Hair and Beard Care Products

Now, let’s go over the most common types of natural ingredients that you’ll find in men’s hair and beard care products.

Plant Oils and Butters

Used to moisturize the beard while adding texture.  Commonly used ingredients include olive oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, shea butter, mango butter, avocado oil, and argan oil.

Essential Oils

Do double-duty.  They provide the product with a clean, natural fragrance.  This, while offering unique properties including anti-inflammatory activity and bacteria-fighting agents.
