5 Easy Steps to Styling Your Hair at Home
January 6, 2021

As 2021 arrives, many of us are scrambling to come up with a resolution that’s both realistic and will create a noticeable difference in our day-to-day lives.  Well, at Don Juan Pomade, we are here to help you out.  One of the easiest ways to start off the new year right is by making some changes to your grooming habits that will pay off immensely in no time.

What You Can Do

Regardless of your hair style, or how you grow out your facial hair, these resolutions will keep you looking your best, and help you feel more confident going forward into the year ahead.

#1: Ditch the Chemicals

First things first: it’s time to finally turn your back on hair and beard products that contain harsh, synthetic chemicals.  If you want your hair and beard to look and feel their absolute best, you should stop using ingredients that can be drying or damaging, like sulfates, silicones and parabens, along with synthetic fragrances that are known to irritate the skin.  Look at the ingredients on a product before buying it and stick to products that contain as many plant-based ingredients as possible, as these are gentler and more nourishing.

#2: Invest in a Good Comb

A lot of men underestimate the importance of having a high-quality hair comb that can smooth hair while helping with the styling process.  It’s time to look at the different types of hair combs available, in terms of size, material and distance between the teeth, and choose which one will best suit your hair’s unique needs.  It is a comb that should be used at least once a day, so choose one that uses high-quality materials that will last.

#3: Start Making Pomade Part of Your Routine

If you have not yet, it is time to incorporate pomade into your daily grooming routine.  No matter your hair style, length, or hair type, you should be using pomade regularly to keep things in place, combat frizz and winter dryness, and create a style that’s unique to you.  High-quality pomades, like the ones we offer, are not just for styling purposes.  They blend together carefully sourced natural ingredients that benefit the health of your hair with lots of nutrients and moisture.

#4: Take Trimming More Seriously

A lot of guys tend to go a long time between trimming sessions due to busy schedules or sheer laziness, and so their hair looks messy and awkward until they finally schedule an appointment (or trim their hair themselves).  This is a good time to commit to regular trimming.  Guys who are trying to maintain a length should opt for monthly trims, while guys who are growing their hair out should go every other month.  Set this in your calendar so that you’re always on top of when it’s time to make a new appointment.

#5: Wash Your Beard Regularly

One of the most commonly neglected aspects of a guy’s grooming schedule is the cleanliness of his beard.  Many men wash their hair regularly but skip out on washing their beard until it’s so greasy that it needs to be cleansed.  A beard should be washed once or twice a week, depending on its texture and length, with no exceptions.  A beard that is not cleaned on a regular basis can become greasy and weighed down, can cause the skin to develop bacteria and fungus, and can cause your beard to smell.

#6: Keep Your Beard Moisturized

Further, a beard needs to be moisturized daily.  What a lot of men don’t realize is that the facial hair is more naturally dry than the hair on the head.  At Don Juan Pomade, we offer a line of natural beard oils that can be applied daily to amp up the moisture of the beard, while offering nutrient-rich plant-based ingredients that are healthy for the facial hair as well as the skin beneath.

#7: Settle on Your Style

This is a good time to finally settle on your personal style, as it pertains to both your hair and your beard.  Men can use their hair and beards to express their unique personality, and having a personal style is a sign of maturity, confidence, and self-assurance.  Whether you are into the rugged lumberjack look or like a neat and tidy appearance, commit to it and follow a grooming routine accordingly.

#8: Figure Out Your Hair Type Once and for All

Another good thing to do is figure out your hair type.  This doesn’t just pertain to the hair on your head, but the beard as well.  Is your hair straight, wavy, or curly?  Thin or thick?  Fine or coarse?  All of these factors matter, because they largely determine what products you should be using, and how you should use them.  For instance, men with coarser, curlier beards may find using beard oil twice a day is more advantageous, since this hair is more prone to moisture.  Men with thin, fine hair on their head should wash their hair more frequently, as it accumulates more grease.

#9: Commit to Using Extra Moisture When Needed

Our hair and beards need different levels of moisture at different times.  The reason why moisture is so important is because dry hair is damaged hair, and it can break and even lead to hair loss if left unchecked.  In the winter, the weather is dry, and this can suck moisture out of the hair.  So, during the cold months, consider using more moisturizing products than usual.

#10: Comb or Brush Your Beard Daily

Finally, you should buy a dedicated comb or brush for your beard, to keep the hairs smooth and free of tangles, and to distribute your products more evenly.  Choose a comb or brush based on your hair type and use it once a day to keep things in check.

Look Extra Good in 2021

Your beard and hair deserve dedicated routines with the right grooming tools and high-quality products to look their absolute best.  This year, your resolution should be to take better care of your beard and hair.  It will help you feel more confident and look your finest.  At Don Juan Pomade, we offer a variety of hair products, beard products and grooming tools to help you as you embrace 2021.
